Kiss Me” is a ballad recorded by American pop rock band Sixpence None the Richer from their 1997 self-titled album. Released as a single on August 12, 1998, the song was a worldwide success. It reached No. 4 on the UK and New Zealand singles charts as well as No. 1 on the Australian and Canadian singles chart, making it the group’s highest-charting single worldwide. “Kiss Me” is also the group’s best-selling single in the United States, peaking at No. 2 and becoming the country’s sixth best-selling single of 1999. “Kiss Me” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

Leonard Cohen, the hugely influential singer and songwriter whose work spanned five decades, died at the age of 82 in November 2016. He was the poet of brokenness, and that brokenness was always there. It proved central to his music and to his body of poetry and literature. Nobody else ever mastered all three disciplines as well as Cohen.

It followed Cohen into a Zen monastery, where years of contemplation and prayer were sometimes as agonizing as the horror that had driven him there. It even appeared among the final lines of the final song on his final record, released weeks before he died in November 2016: “It’s over now, the water and the wine/We were broken then, but now we’re borderline.”

My own love affair with his music started in the early 1970’s and continues. I do not believe that another musical poet of his caliber exists. Here he is at his famous 2008 return concert at the O2 arena in London, singing ‘Dance Me to the End of Love’.
