About the theme
From 11 December 2020
The longish description is:
Sometimes in wine tastings, we do a ‘horizontal tasting’. No, it’s not when we lie down and drink. What we do is drink the same wine, eg. a 2017 Merlot, but from different winemakers. So, same material – the Merlot grape – by different artists and styles. It’s interesting and refreshing to experience the difference personal interpretation makes!
Our next lockdown theme is a ‘horizontal tasting’ of music. Working in pairs (which you will receive soon), each pair will get a song for which they need to find two covers (not the original artist). You can work together to ensure you don’t choose the same song. The result will be a chance to listen to seven songs and experience how different ‘winemakers’ use the same material to produce very different experiences and ‘tastes’. Enjoy the tasting!

No bells, no whistles. Just a clean nice young lady. I am tempted to invite her to our next braai party!

Billie Eilish-yesterday lyrics (Oscars 2020)
As I looked through all the covers for Yesterday, I got quite overwhelmed by the number of people that did cover that song.
We are talking the likes of Marvin Gay, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley amongst many others. In the end, I chose Billie Eilish.
She gives a solemn performance at the 2020 Oscars during the memorial section.
In the comments there are many that are offended by the clapping during her singing, for me I don’t agree or disagree, I feel these people might have reacted instinctively and did not mean disrespect to anyone. (Going with that)
Here she is…

The Beatles – Eleanor Rigby (Violet Orlandi cover)
In a graveyard in Liverpool lies a headstone bearing the name Eleanor Rigby. Its deeds are being auctioned later as part of a sale of Beatles memorabilia, but what is the real story behind the Fab Four’s famous hit?
It was at a church fete in 1957 that John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met. Just yards away lay the grave of scullery maid Eleanor Rigby, who had died, aged 44, in 1939.
Nine years later, McCartney would pen the lyrics for what became one of the band’s most celebrated songs.
Often described as a lament for the lonely, or a commentary on life in post-war Britain, it tells the story of a woman who “died in the church and was buried along with her name”.
Written primarily by McCartney, Eleanor Rigby was released in 1966 as part of a double A-side single which also featured Yellow Submarine
The song also formed part of The Beatles’ album, Revolver, and the single was released on the same day as the LP
The single spent four weeks at number one in the UK charts
In the US it reached number 11 and was nominated for three Grammys

Alessia Cara performed at the Elvis All-Star Tribute which got aired on 17 February 2019 and was recorded on 09 January 2019.
This was a tough choice as there were so many versions I had to choose from, from rap to pop to jazz to rock and wow, all kinds of genres. Then the top 5 was chosen and my Wine Tasting Partner agreed that this was a great version.
Enjoy everyone!

Elvis Presley – Green Green Grass Of Home
I always thought that this song was a happy tale told by a man returning to his childhood home. It turns out that this a sad story being told by a man on death row as he awakens on the morning of his scheduled execution, and he has been dreaming of seeing the people and places he loves before he dies.
I thought I might find an interesting unknown version of this great classic, but as I searched I stopped to listen to this version by Elvis Presley. I feel that his beautiful, rich voice conveys the sadness and longing of the words perfectly.

Mike Farris “Green Green Grass of Home”
I absolutely loved this version. Haven’t come across Mike Farris before but after going through a lot of options, this one really was great

Hallelujah – Live Symphony & Choir – Feat. 16 yr. old McKenna Breinholt
I have chosen this amazing singer, McKenna Brienholt, as her version of “Hallelulia” is different, sincere and beautifully phrased. Of course, I love the full orchestration and choir too!!
She was 16 when this recording was made which is hard to believe as her version displays incredible maturity. She sings a wide range of songs but in my opinion, she outdoes herself in this recording. Enjoy!!

K.D. Lang sings Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah
My Hallelujah tonight is from one of my most favourite artists – KD Lang. She always sings with so much passion. I believe that better than most, she truly understands and interprets the songs she performs. Enjoy!
