Same Song, Different Vibe!

We’ve all got that one song we love — but secretly prefer the other version! 😎

Maybe it’s a remix that slaps harder, a live version that gives you chills, or a cover that totally redefines the track.

Your challenge:
Pick a song you love — and the version you think tops the original.

You must Play both songs!

Let’s get loud, laugh a little, and see which versions reign supreme.
Same song, new energy — bring the vibe, not the debate… (or maybe a little debate😉)

Note:
You must play both songs

Love me like you do

The original artist of the song “Love Me Like You Do” is Ellie Goulding. The song was released in 2015 as part of the soundtrack for the film Fifty Shades of Grey.

In my opinion this cover is much better than the original.

Zosia

The Nightshift

The song ” the Nightshift” was written by the Commodores as a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson who both died in 1984.

In 2022 Bruce Springsteen sang the cover and I think it is more soulful. Enjoy

Knocking on Heaven’s Door

Bob Dylan wrote “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” back in ’73 – calm, soulful, and kinda heartbreaking.
Then Guns N’ Roses came along and turned it into a full-blown rock prayer.

Same song, totally different universe.
I am sure from our audience there will be voters for both universes. Who nailed it for you, the quiet poet or the wild ones?🎶

A few fun facts:

– Dylan actually wrote it for the 1973 Western film Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid.
– The song only has two short verses – yet it’s been covered by over 200 artists!
– Guns N’ Roses started performing it live in the late 80s before officially releasing it in 1990 on the Days of Thunder soundtrack.
– Axl recorded multiple versions – the reggae-influenced one they did live in the 90s was entirely spontaneous.
– Bob Dylan once said he “loved” the Guns version – which is rare praise from him.

Valerie

I love Amy’s version of this song, and hadn’t heard the original by Indie Rock band Zutons.

But then….. there is this great version by the fabulous Teddy Swims.

Girls Just Want To Have Fun

Could not believe this original version of this song is now a classic pop song. Gosh. When I heard it I was actually horrified. This original sucks ……

And this one definitely doesn’t!

Sunrise, Sunset

Mirriam Makeba covered a beautiful song written by the New Zealand singer, Roger Whittaker… a lament to growing older. This song needed real gentleness and sensitivity to really get the sentiment across. Despite Mirrian Makeba being rated as an incredible singer, I think she lost the plot with her rendition. Here is hers, followed by The original by Roger Whittaker.

I started a joke

I have chosen the original version of this song by the Bee Gees. There is also a cover version by Ruby Lee. Both are worth a listen and your choice is personal. I like both but the Bee Gees do it best for me. A more soulful version I think and the one I heard when the Bee Gees were at their peak.

Never Let Me Down Again

Depeche mode’s version of this song has always been one of my “it” songs … then this simple, beautiful version by Jessica Maizen found its way to me.

Little Drummer Boy

OK, OK. I know it’s early for Christmas. But here are two remarkable, and very different, versions of Little Drummer Boy, both songs by the group For King and Country. Personally, I prefer the second version. Enjoy and Happy Christmas!

Red Red Wine

UB40’s “Red Red Wine” success was partly thanks to a rogue DJ who played it against label instructions, sparking a trend and “radio mutiny.”
UB40 were unaware “Red Red Wine” was by Neil Diamond, believing it was a Tony Tribe song, only discovering the truth after recording it.
Neil Diamond never thanked UB40 for reviving his song, which annoyed band member Robin Campbell, who joked, “Which peeved me no end!”
Performing “Red Red Wine” for Nelson Mandela was a career highlight for UB40’s Robin Campbell. He said, “And, you know, they all know the song and obviously the meaning of it. That was fantastic for me.

I Want to Break Free

Finding a good cover version of any song by Queen is a mission on its own and then I remembered a concert I attended when serving as military attaché in North Korea. Thanks to the efforts of my colleague Group Captain van der Merwe we enjoyed VIP treatment and witnessed an amazing performance by the North Korean Freedom Orchestra and choir. You will be blown away like we were.

Paul P – BONUS as earned by all his hard work

Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)

As mentioned I am allowed to play a BONUS SONG. Well, I just made that rule 😃

I absolutely LOVE Journey. The tight pants – maybe not all appealing (choice of words Uhum …).
Check these 2 versions!
