Sheryl Crow – All I Wanna Do
In 1995 I attended my first international work conference, which our US parent company hosted at the real Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Fortunately, my colleague Tracy Lemonides had been to the US before, so navigating airports wasn’t a challenge (like being with Chrisna now). It was a highlight of my working career – 6,500 delegates from all over the world attended, and for the conference party the company booked out the whole of Pleasure Island. For the music, they flew in The Grateful Dead. What a night!
After the conference, we flew to the company headquarters in San Francisco. What a city! 😊 The Friday before we flew home, we rented a car to drive to a PC show somewhere in San Fran to buy some technology for our business, that wasn’t available in South Africa.
While driving through a neat residential neighbourhood (like Brakpan), with the windows open, absolutely enjoying the whole vibe and experience, my song comes over the radio. We turned the volume to maximum and sang along at the top of our voices. I believe this is one of Sheryl Crow’s best-ever songs, and whenever I hear it, I’m transported back to that wonderful experience in the US. You are permitted to tap your feet and shake your booty.
And, some days, I too want to start the day with a beer buzz…
Enjoy!

“Evening Bells” – Ivan Rebroff & Don Cossack Choir (oktavist Paul Myhalik)
My song tonight reminds me of my father who would have been 101 two weeks ago. Dad had a great voice and could sing in baritone and then change to soprano – mainly folk songs.
Every time I hear Ivan Rebroff I have visions of Dad.
Ivan was not Russian as his name suggests. He was born in Germany – his name being Hans-Rolf Rippert. His voice has a range of four and a half octaves from soprano to bass.

Bob Dylan – Like A Rolling Stone (Live at Newport 1965)
This song reminds me of a particular holiday I spent in Balito with an old friend. (There were other people too) We played this song every time we went to the beach. It always reminds me of him and the good time we had. Lots of beer and some damn good food too.
I will also post a little piece where Al Kooper talks of how he got involved in the song. It is obviously just trivia, so no need to watch.

Gipsy Kings – Bamboléo
Chrisna and I went to Europe to visit her brother and sister-in-law. We took a road trip from Paris to Zurich and onto Italy and then Provance in the south of France. It was travelling through the Provance countryside where Lorenci played this tape (at full blast) in the car! The breathtaking scenery and this song will always remind me of this wonderful trip – our song for always!

HAUSER and Señorita – A Thousand Years
Sorry, I am in a bit of a rush. My song is very dear to my heart it is a song Johann played so often to me when he was very sick. And he always used to say how sorry he is that he won’t live long enough to tell me every day how much he loves and appreciates me. That broke our hearts we used to cry together. I would tell him I love you now, and I will love you till the day I die

Time after Time Romy and Michelle
My assistant Annette and I worked really well together for just on 2 years. Both of us slightly wild at heart, shared a “cube” with a very “proper, everything-in-order and in it’s proper place” compliance officer. (Annette and I were natural rebels). Often Mike used to look at us and shake his head, thinking we were nuts, but over time he started loosening up and becoming a little like us. He couldn’t help but enjoy our antics or the fact that he liked us girls.
One day Annette and I were talking about a really funny movie we watched when we were in high school called “ Romy and Michelle’s high school reunion”. We both loved the movie and were going on about it, as it was going to be on E-TV that evening.
Well Mike decided to watch the movie and was flabbergasted that we loved it so much. He thought the movie was absolute drivel, but he watched the whole movie to make sure he didn’t miss the “awesome part”. “The awesome part” was when the girls realised that they had nothing to prove to their high school alumni, had everything they needed to have a great life, including an amazing friendship.
Romy didn’t want to dance with her dream guy and leave her Bestie Michelle on the sidelines, so they decided to all dance together.
Over the years, whenever Annette and I hear this song, we immediately think of each other (and Mike) and we will call each other to check-in (almost every time). Even Mike thinks of us when he hears the song, however, it’s seldom that he does hear this type of thing on Classic FM.
I managed to get a clip of the song and the dance for you.

“We Will Rock You” from the musical by Queen and Ben Elton, We Will Rock You.
I have travelled the world, raised 3 children, enjoyed a wonderful life, and have a mountain of special memories and music to complement It.
Visiting London and staying at my friend Corrine’s flat in Pimlico in June 2002 with my daughters, Bernadette and Aneska were amazing. They absolutely loved seeing all the places I have always been telling them about and experiencing everything London has to offer.
Our theatre experience was the highlight of our holiday. The Musical show presented by Queen and Ben Elton at the Dominium theatre, “We will Rock you”. It really rocked us. We loved it.
The musical tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought and fashion, and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same. Musical instruments and composers are forbidden, and rock music is all but unknown.
Can you imagine the world without rock music?
The show become an audience favourite, becoming the longest-running musical at the Dominion Theatre, celebrating its tenth anniversary on 14 May 2012. It will be on stage again in 2022 with the 20th anniversary.
Enjoy “We will rock you” by the cast of this great musical.

Wham! – Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
When my parents divorced, I’m not sure what my Dad was smoking when he chose a new wife. Man ……… my stepmother was an alien – I swear! Not the nice kind like the one Kim Basinger played in that movie with Dan Aykroyd, oh nooooooo!
She was a real (milk-producing animal) and the most horrible (the place at the coast where seawater meets sand).
We really had a horrible time with her in the 12-odd years that my Dad was under her spell. We were very deprived of many things during that time. We really didn’t enjoy it.
Our Mom, on the other hand, would do anything to see my brother and me happy.
We got to see her every 2nd Saturday from 9 am-4 pm. In those few hours, the 2 of us underwent a massive transformation. We were so free! We could ride bikes, play with friends, kick a ball – wooohooo! We were allowed to be kids! It was a case of “When the cat is away, who actually cares what happens next!”
Now, she loved playing music. She always had music in the car, so as soon as we got in the car, the radio/cassette player went on, and stayed on as long and loud as possible.
You couldn’t get many songs onto those 60-minute TDK tapes Lynda mentioned before. And you couldn’t choose whatever song you wanted like a CD – you had to play the song or FAST FORWARD to the next song. But that made the tapes stretch, so we just let the tapes play until the end.
It’s amazing how you remember the songs and the song order. I used to hear the song on the radio years later, and then secretly hope that the next song was the same one from my Mom’s tape. The music and the memories related to it were ingrained in me. So it’s safe to say that whenever I hear certain songs, it takes me back to that special time when we shared wonderful memories with a special person – my Mom.
My song today is one of those songs she kept playing in the car. She loved Wham, and it’s no wonder why I love them too.
Enjoy!!
