Hello and Goodbye
Any song that is about a hello or goodbye/farewell. Having the words hello and goodbye just in the title doesn’t count.

Eagle-Eye Cherry – Save Tonight
This song puts perfectly that “tug” that you feel when someone special is about to leave your life, usually for a very long time, or forever, not because either of you want it, but because it has to be.
I find these farewells the most painful. I’ve had these sad experiences in romance, but also, as South Africans, a lot of us have felt this with emigrations.

Amy Shark – I Said Hi
The song is actually a middle finger to the music industry who ignored Amy before her song Adore went viral and has nothing at all to do with anyone’s mum.
The lyrics deal with Amy’s long battle for her big break in the music industry, addressing the label representatives that turned her down over and over, but now want a piece of her success. “I lay half awake, thinking what’s it’s gonna take, for my moment to arrive, so sick and paralyzed”, she shows her vulnerable side describing the struggle only to continue in a sassy manner: “Lying on my side, watching time fly by and I bet the whole world thought that I would give up today.” This song will serve as inspiration for all the singer-songwriters out there who did not get their moment to shine yet.

Adele – Hello

Sara Bareilles – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
This song really taps into that feeling of being fed up with the glitz and glam of the music biz. You know how in “The Wizard of Oz” there’s that Yellow Brick Road that promises all sorts of wonders? Well, in this song, it stands for the chase after fame and fortune. But here’s the twist: there is a realization that maybe this shiny path isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. He/she starts missing a simpler, more down-to-earth life. It’s kind of like a trip down memory lane, wishing for realness and a break from all the flashiness of stardom.
(In present company I cannot sing nor do I suffer from flashy stardom)

Hollow Coves – Hello
My song this evening is by an Australian 2-man folk music band, Hollow Coves. If you don’t know them and like beautiful folk music, do yourself a favour. My song is ‘Hello’ and is about someone struggling to deal with the isolation of Covid lockdown.
From the lyrics: Hello, hello, is there anybody out there? I’ve got my door open, come in, come in. This song is particularly special to me given how we managed to use music during Covid to stay in touch, and be able to say ‘Come in, come in, I know there is someone out there’! ????
