Celebrate
Regardless of how bleak things may look in SA right now, there are many reasons to be grateful and to celebrate.
Your song must be about celebration, whether that’s party time, success, good health, birthdays, achievements, or new toys – you decide. As long as the song makes it clear that some things are worth celebrating…

P!NK – TRUSTFALL (Live on The Graham Norton Show) ft. Yoann Bourgeois
New Pink song:
I celebrate that there is always someone to catch us and to show us that life is great – no matter what is happening in our world and the world.
In Pink’s own words:
“Close your eyes and leave it all behind
Go where love is on our side
It’s a trust fall , baby
It’s a trust fall, baby”
American singer-songwriter P!NK appeared on BBC One The Graham Norton Show to perform “TRUSTFALL”. This time, French dancer Yoann Bourgeois joined in her performance. The song is the title track of her ninth studio album “TRUSTFALL”, which was released on February 17, 2023

John Parr – St. Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion)
The song is amazing. It’s pure 1980s cheese, featuring an obnoxious drum machine, way too much electric guitar and needlessly dramatic lyrics. Is it entirely too on the nose? Yes. Does it have absolutely nothing to do with the film St. Elmo’s Fire? Also yes. The song was originally written about a Canadian athlete.
“St. Elmo’s Fire” is a piece of pure inspiration. It is trying so so hard to get you pumped and so so hard to get you inspired and moving and fired up. There are eagles, there are oceans, there are fire metaphors, there’s so much here and it’s all so cheesy but at the same time, it’s kick-starting you into high gear. John Parr is just so optimistic that he (and you!) can push through this and reach that new horizon. It’s determination and hope and pushing forward through whatever challenge it throws at you. “You broke the boy in me but you won’t break the man.” Now’s the time to do this! There’s hope for a better world and if you just kick yourself into high gear and feel that fire burning in you, you can climb that highest mountain and get yourself to a better place.
The movie is apparently absolutely terrible, mainly focusing on upper-class white twenty-somethings whining about their lives, so there is no need to watch that.

World in Union – 2019 Rugby World Cup (Springbok Edition)
My song is about glory, and the celebration of victory that a sporting event brought to a nation. What event am I talking about? One that will probably bring tears to any South Africa’s eyes who ever witnessed it. I was in the Westbank Corner at Kyalami. It was mayhem! But what followed the 4 hours after that when trying to get home was something that can never be topped.
Even though we go through hardships in SA, we can still be proud of what we once were as a nation and hopefully get back there again.

DeBarge – Rhythm Of The Night
What I love about music is that no matter what kind of day you’ve had, you can put on the right type of music and “vibe” for you.
I have always known this, but my beautiful Jay showed an even deeper side to it when, even he, had different selections, variations, themes etc. in his musical choices, as early as when he was a baby. One of my favourite memories was how he and I would wiggle to the music while I dried him off after his bath.
The thing is tuning in to the music has always given an avenue to forget about the worries on your mind or celebrate the “wins/blessings”.
There is very little I haven’t celebrated and enjoyed without musical accompaniment, such as:
Driving – yes I LOVE driving and it’s generally a celebration for me, especially if I can do it at speed.
Celebrating the diversity of emotions – there’s nothing like screaming with Chester from Linkin Park playing on the way home – ok Paulie Evanescence for you. Either way you get home a happier person and your family celebrates.
Sitting quietly with an alcoholic beverage (or two, three, more… whatever) in front of the fire … just enjoying the moment
Celebrating a birthday/anniversary/milestone – nothing like ‘n lekker opskop.
Housework – ok housework isn’t really lekker, unless you are “scrubbing” something when seriously cross … but I remember Monday nights as being my house cleaning nights before I could afford domestic assistance. I would pump up the jam, tap or wiggle or dance with the mop, whatever … Shakira’s “Hips don’t lie” album was a real favourite and made things go quicker … well that and the fact that I wanted to finish in time to watch Desperate Housewives on SABC TV.
The point is, whatever day it is, you can tap into the Rhythm of that Night and celebrate whatever you can think of – even if it’s just celebrating the ability to hear something wonderful 🙂 and if the power is out … you can even listen to the rhythm of the crickets and enjoy that too.

B. J. Thomas – Hooked on a Feeling 2020
This song was written by Mark James and first released in 1968 by B J Thomas. There have been many cover versions over the years.
“Hooked On A Feeling” tells the tale of a man who is enjoying the euphoria and excitement of falling in love – unable to resist the feelings deep inside him. He got inspiration from his feelings for his childhood sweetheart on writing the song.
As it was the 1960’s you will find some references to the effects of drugs!!
This is a recording from a 2020 performance. Sadly B J Thomas is no longer with us.
I see this song as a celebration of newfound love. It was always a great favourite in our home and at the great parties we enjoyed in our somewhat younger days.

Shania Twain – Party For Two ft. Billy Currington
Parties, other than political, are generally a celebration. They don’t require lots of people – in fact, a party of one or two could work very well. larger parties are also known to work spectacularly well, but more about that shortly. My song tonight is about a party for two, and with this artist, I would definitely accept. ????????
