Round One

Esther

Elvis Presley Love Me Tender (1956)

Liezel

The Greatest Showman | “This Is Me” with Keala Settle

My selection for tonight is from the movie The Greatest Showman. This is the studio recording which gives me goosebumps every single time and in my opinion, is even more powerful a performance than the final cut of the movie. The emotion … enjoy

Karen

Beyoncé – “The Way We Were” (Barbra Streisand Tribute) | 2008 Kennedy Center Honors

This song makes me feel nostalgic. I love Barbara Streisand’s work (movies and music) and there are times I wish I could go back to the way we were when I was much younger….. I also happen to like Beyonce too. Enjoy

Sarah

Ewan McGregor Your Song with Lyrics from Moulin Rouge

Wilfred

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

A timeless classic, desperately sad, in memory of a lost friend. These guys know how to make music.

Paul

I’ll Never Love Again (from A Star Is Born)

So anyone who has seen the movie A Star Is Born, will know what an amazing movie this is. Not to give too much away, this is an amazing movie and my song is the last song she sings for someone who is no longer …….
It’s a deep song for the movie, but also for anyone who’s lost someone really close to them like two of the characters in this movie.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper are so awesome in this movie, it’s definitely a WOW movie for me.

Enjoy!

Passenger | Setting Suns

As we near the end of a dreadful year, and it sometimes seems that there is no end in sight as Europe re-enters lockdown and our economy staggers, just sometimes I feel a little weary. It’s a feeling that is beautifully described in the words of Michael Rosenberg, a solo artist who still performs under the name of his original group, Passenger. In his song, he says ‘I’m getting old and tired of chasing setting suns’. It’s set in a place you may recognise. Listen carefully to the words and enjoy. It’s is one of my favourite quiet time songs.

Arno

H. Grimaud 2/3 Rachmaninov piano concerto No.2 in C minor, op.18 [Adagio sostenuto]

My fav composer. Technical difficulty extreme. Listen on hard.

Lynda

The Moody Blues – Nights In White Satin (1968)

This is real oldie released in 1967 and one of my old-time favourites and still appears as one of the top 5 songs of all time! Enjoy

Deborah

Angels in Heaven – Chris Rodrigues & the Spoon Lady

Chris Rodrigues and Abby the Spoon Lady performing Angels in Heaven.
I find Abby and her playing quite mesmerising

Chrisna

Kristoffer Fogelmark – Love Was My Alibi

My song today is from the movie The Water Diviner. A very haunting song sung by Christoffer Fogelmark.

Sue

Dana Winner – One Moment In Time live

My choice is nothing new. It is a song I have always loved. This version by Dana Winner is the most sensitive, controlled, and accomplished version I have heard. Watch the reactions of the people shown in the video. I hope that you enjoy ” One Moment in Time”.

Zosia

Baby Can I Hold You Tonight – Pavarotti and Tracy Chapman Live

Like Errol, it was difficult to choose one song. I have chosen a duo of Tracy Chapman and Pavarotti. Enjoy

Richard

Caro Emerald Live – A Night Like This @ Sziget 2012

In 2012 I attended a conference for retired field-marshalls in Budapest. A group of us took time out to attend a Caro Emerald concert. Our VIP seats were on an elevated platform suspended from an enormous crane. It was a memorable occasion. You might notice the one unfortunate officer getting a little over-excited towards the end of the show

Round Two

Sarah

Dirty Dancing – Time of my Life (Final Dance)

Karen

Will Young – Evergreen

Many years ago (just over 20 to be precise 😜) a very wise friend told me you can’t love someone else fully and can’t BE loved fully until you love yourself in a self-nurturing way. You have to be whole to have a healthy relationship as you can never fill the hole in someone else’s heart and vice versa.
I was reminded of this in a discussion with a friend this week – it takes two whole people to have a healthy relationship.

My song choice today was I song I sang repeatedly to myself during and after my divorce as a reminder to love myself with an evergreen love…

Arno

Numb – Linkin Park

Deborah

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Red Right Hand

I discovered Nic Cave fairly recently and I love his dark strangeness. This song is the theme tune from Peaky Blinders; “Red Right Hand”.

Errol

Teddy Swims – You’re Still The One (Shania Twain Cover)

My dear muso friends – there is so much very good music to choose from! Tonight I have chosen one of my favorite genres – country and western – with a song from one of my favorite artists- Shania Twain. But – it’s a cover by an artist I enjoy greatly – Teddy Swims. Please look him up as you will not be disappointed.

Here’s the math: favorite + favorite + enjoy greatly = foot-tapping happiness.

Enjoy!

Esther

Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud

Was my opening dance song for our wedding😢

Chrisna

Maren Morris – The Bones

Zosia

Queen + Adam Lambert – The Show Must Go On (Live At The O2, London, UK, 04/07/2018)

Through this rough year only one thing to say. The Show Must go On

Liezel

AURORA – Teardrop (Massive Attack cover)

I absolutely love the clarity of Aurora’s voice, combined with her originality. When Massive Attack brought out this song I couldn’t get enough of it. This version has me addicted once again.

Sue

Shirley Bassey – I Owe It All To You

The great Shirley Bassey is the first female singer to record songs over a 70-year career. She began performing at the age of 13 and had her first hit at 19. Her list of hits creates memories for me and who can forget her amazing sequined outfits. She is a great Welsh singer and a true icon of the entertainment world.
This is her 2020 release to celebrate her epic career. It is amazing to hear how strong her wonderful voice still is at the age of 83. I hope you enjoy: ” I owe it all to you”

Wilfred

Sean Bay vs. Mehdi Mouelhi – Maktoub (Sean Bay’s Long Edit) 2012

Seeing it is the last “free for all” theme-less round ever, I chose a song, actually a genre, that will probably never match any theme.

I love the Buddha-Bar collection. The songs are mostly covers, edits, and remixes. They work well for me when I am working or as background music at a dinner party.

Here is my song, Maktoub, a single selection from a large pool of options. Some could classify this as elevator music, don’t judge me.

Paul

Pink Martini – Amado Mio | Live from Seattle – 2011

Whoever forced us to listen to Caro Emerald, I will be forever in your debt – I love her stuff!

Now to my choice ……… again – I stumbled upon this artist while browsing Caro Emerald’s music. I’d never heard of her before, but I like the passion she puts into the songs, she has great rhythm, and she reminds me of an equally sexy Mama – my wife! Brrrrr …….

Arno, I am sure you will enjoy this …….. hope you all do too.

Richard

Streets Of London – Ralph McTell featuring the Crisis Choir with guest vocalist Annie Lennox

Dealing with the dreaded virus and the ongoing saga with Trump, Zondo, and Zuma left me feeling a little gloomy, and then I discovered this version of an old classic by Ralph McTell with the Crisis choir. In a strange way, it made me feel good again. Hope it has the same effect on you.

Lynda

Savage Garden – Truly Madly Deeply

Haven’t heard this group for a very long time and they were one of my favourites! I’m sure many of you know them, but as the last song for the ‘no themes cycles’, I thought I’d give you a blast from the past! Enjoy!
