I absolutely love this song. It shows the ancient Hebraic worship in the tabernacle as well as the rituals around Passover. You will notice the shofar in on the mountain as well as within the song proclaiming the Almighty One has arrived amongst His people. You will hear the call of the people to God in the beginning of the song. The tabernacle was later replaced by the Temple, which has been torn down, only one wall remaining, the wailing wall. Plans to rebuild the temple are currently in the works and all the special elements you see replicated in this video have already been made and collected awaiting the time they can again be displayed in the temple.

The Van der Merwe in me is passionate about the beauty and expressiveness of the Afrikaans language. ‘Ek gaan jou moer’ of ‘Moenie nou kom kak soek nie boetie’ and a thousand other words and phrases simply don’t translate. I had the privilege of a life-long friend, Ben Schoeman, who was a master at the beauty of Afrikaans and made it sound like music. Our own beloved Adri was another champion who shared her love for Afrikaans music with us. My choice of song shares Afrikaans and the rhythm of the Cape Coloureds – the most colourful users of the Afrikaans language! Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels – Wie se kind is jy? A song about a young girl flirting with an older man. Enjoy!

My choice of ‘foreign’ language song today is Italian, sung by one of my favourite artists. Not one of he’s well-known songs but my favourite! The song is called Sogno and means ‘My Dream’ in English. The clip I’ve chosen hasn’t got visuals, but the translation of the song. Enjoy!

Well, what a rollercoaster ride guys, that’s all I can say.
Well to make a short story long, here goes ………
The theme came up, and I immediately thought my go-to choice was going to be from my in-house favourite artist, Julio Iglesias. I looked up many songs but couldn’t pick one that stood out, I loved them all. Tried others (Gypsy Kings, Eros Ramazotti, Celine Dion, Portuguese artists, to name a few).
So I looked up any duets Julio and his son/s may have done – eek! Seems they don’t see eye-to-eye on the subject. Ok ………
I thought of giving you guys something different, so I browsed Google and came up with some other songs which seemed pretty awesome. Found a few possibilities for the Music Evening in the process. So many well-known non-English songs out there.
So Sunday night I looked up Helmut Lotti and landed up enjoying his OUT OF AFRICA album while I was cooking. Then I wondered what Andre Rieu had in his arsenal. Liezel and Jay landed up watching one of his concerts on Monday night while I was cooking.
Tuesday came and I started searching for content while working. As one Youtube video played, so another one caught my eye on the right, and I listened to that. Later on, I put on Andre Rieu while I worked a bit more.
And that’s when I saw her – an innocent little 11-year old girl who made me stop in the middle of work, taking my breath away.
I watched in awe. Needless to say, here I was the rest of the afternoon balling my eyes out while going through her stuff. Then “Listen Linda” played her song at 5 pm and my eyes got another wack – LOL.
So I’m gobsmacked and saggy-eyed, and after Liezel goes to bed, I go and look for more on this little kid.
Wow man, just WOW ……… You’ll see what I mean if you know of her, or if you saw the same videos I saw.
What struck me was that I’d never heard of her before, and guess what? She lives in SA for the last 3 years! In Potch, where her Granny used to live.
I wondered “Why?” – apparently the government protects kids so much she could not do much in terms of working. The school system was also very rigid, which did not allow for her to spread her wings a little. Hence the move to SA in 2015.
She grew up in The Netherlands. Father is Dutch, Mom is South African (woohoo!).
The first time she came to SA she saw the kids in a local school (Ikageng) who had no swings or anything to play on, so with her earnings she made from winning Holland’s Got Talent at the age of 9 (YES, 9!!), she bought the school playground equipment. Gobsmacked again ….
I watched more and more and kept getting blown away. It was just amazing ………
Well I’ll get on with it……..
Her name is Amina Willighagen.
She won Holland’s got talent at the age of 9.
She blew away the competitors at another competition for kids 2 years later.
The video I chose to play was the first time the judges had seen her on Holland’s got Talent.
The shock on their faces is priceless.
Her humbleness and soft heart amazed me.
She’d never had voice coaching and the judges were more amazed.
You’ll see ………
Paul – 2 years on
Here she is 2 years later on the Andre Rieu show where I spotted her.
Paul – Documentary
And a small documentary, one of MANY videos I watched yesterday about her.

My song today is by a Cuban born artist who has sold more than 120 million records. She also performs in Spanish and English. Enjoy.

Kids United is a French musical group of five children born between 2004 and 2009. It has been created to support UNICEF campaigns and is sponsored by Hélène Ségara and Corneille, two Francophone singers.
Considering that I would have been in Paris this weekend were it not for COVID my song just had to be French…
Karen – second choice
You might like my second choice better. …. real eye candy too.

Jose Carreras is my favourite of The Three Tenors. I saw him live in Pretoria at the huge open-air concert – so special. Sissel I had not heard of before and what a discovery! She is from Norway and is exquisite. Her soprano voice is truly amazing and she has appeared as a solo artist and in duets for many years.
This was originally sung by Diana Ross and later as a duet by Dolly Parton and Julio Iglesias. I hope that you enjoy this version of a beautiful and touching duet.
More second choice

We often listen to music from Africa and had the privilege of seeing Ismael Lo from Senegal at the open-air Kirstenbosch theatre. Enjoy Africa.

It was while on a weekend pass during the Italian campaign that I discovered this amazing restaurant near Cortona. The family that ran it not only served the best pasta north of Naples but provided excellent musical entertainment. On my trips to Italy, I always made a point of calling on the family. The food is still good and the music so Italian. I took this video on my last visit. Richard
